This is my essay which was part of my application to TENT 2020 at Toronto Fringe Festival, which is cancelled apart from TENT.
The Reasoning for Applying to TENT
I have chosen to apply to the Theatre Entrepreneurs’ Network and Training July program because I want to gain relatable experiences that I could list during potential auditions and opportunities. I learned about this event through conference discussion with my program instructors at Toronto Film School, where I am a student in the acting program. My recall of TENT includes my perception that it is excellent at addressing the need for theatre training in aspiring professionals, a category in which I would presently subsist. I consistently search for opportunities to apply myself to the career path of theatre and camera acting that is already on trajectory. TENT would aid my interests during the Summer in an attempt to produce wellrounded and complete work in a setting of well-marketed events that create memorable learning. Learning from esteemed artistic directors in a modern stage/amphitheatre setting would be valuable in several regards. To describe what would be an optimal outcome of TENT participation, it would be preferential to generate a network of other local artists and realize in actuality the goals I have in mind for creative expression through acting. I want to build a further acting resume while concurrently enrolled in an acting program (as well as presently taking The Second City courses online). I steadfastly agree with the concepts of entrepreneurship in accordance with theatre and the development of emerging actors. I understand the value given to The Toronto Fringe Festival in terms of how it connects artists with dynamic and meaningful audiences in a rewarding manner. I envision an effective atmosphere which is highly conducive to creating a greater amount of work within a limiting time frame; that is, working at a more productive rate to develop acting maturity. Actors create emotions by connecting with the audience, even upon simplistic means such as specified distance from the viewers, and through the precise projection of voice and volume. These are characteristics I would intend to showcase at this TENT program with professionality. Furthermore, given the fact that performances happen in real time, the factors of preparation are integral. To have the correct occasion to prepare the exact personalities and quirks of the characters would provide an immense benefit. Also the notion of workshops that have themes of “grant writing” and “promotion and publicity” are appealing. Presently, I have several specific notions to convey my ongoing interests pertaining to live performance which include the belief that being fully present with a group of tangible people for collaboration is essential to the art of acting. Theatre is continually evolving even in the sense that the same script would be performed different and unique from performance to performance. Plays and musicals promote education and literacy in the direct sense of corresponding to higher academic achievement.
